Castles of Sion, Wallis

Sion

Sion is a capital city of Canton Wallis (Valais), Switzerland. It has a huge history which begins in prehistoric times. The oldest trace of the human settlement comes from 6200 BC during the late Mesolithic (Wikipedia*). Sion has beautiful medieval city and four castles. We have visited just two of them.

Some historical facts:

After the last king of Burgundy, Rudolph III gave the country of Valais to Bishop Hugo (998-1017), princes Bishops became the most powerful spiritual and social nobles in the Upper Rhone Valey. Sion became the political and religious centre of the region. That’s why the Cathedral had two functions and became more and more fortified to have a function not just as a church, but also as a protective building.

Valère was always “upgraded”. First buildings were in Romanesque style, later came gothic accents and the rest (The current choir stalls) were added in the middle of the 17-th century.

Our opinion

Definitely, a place to visit! Beautiful, romantic and of course will be the point for all middle times lovers. Stunning views guaranteed. It is not that big. Don’t need a lot of time but comfortable shoes – must have! Because you have to hike up to this amazing place. Not long, but still uphill and downhill. Don’t forget to take water with you and some snacks.

Tourbillon Castle 13th century

fullsizeoutput_7ae

After Valère you can walk to the Tourbillon castle. It is also a few minutes of hiking but it worth it. From the castle left not so much, so it is more ruins. We were in February, so to come inside we couldn’t. Castle closed from the middle of November until the middle of March. But still, you can visit it for free and walk around the beautiful medieval building. Be careful! It can be dangerous, so if you are with kids, keep them close. Rock is very high and one part of the castle is finishing exactly at the end of it!

Tourbillon
Dangerous part!

Some historical facts:

Castle was built in 1290 – 1308 years by the Bishop of Sion as his residence. After a while, it became just summer residence of followed Bishops and a symbol of spiritual and social power. A big part of the castle was destroyed during the Raaron affair in 1417. After, it was rebuilt in 1440 – 1450. Then the castle was destroyed in a fire in 1788. Just in 1966-1969, it was restored and again in 1993-1996. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Our opinion:

Great place to visit. Especially in not a season time when there are not so many people. We were here in the evening and watched the sunset. So romantic place for the picnic. Surely, in Summer is super hot (like in all Wallis), but spring and autumn are definitely the perfect time to spend some great moments around the castle.

Onion Market “Ziebelemärit” in Bern

Every fourth Monday of November old city of Bern becomes an onion market. Farmers from all country selling their best onions for locals and tourists from very early morning until 18:00. Onions are woven into beautiful braids and look so gorgeous! Braids are made in many sizes – beginning with the little ones and finishing with around 1 meter long! Farmers beginning to build their stands already from 4:00 in the morning! And buyers are hunting for the best onion braids already at 6:00 !

Onions are everywhere

Almost everything is sold!

Definitely one of the longest braids on the market!
You even should give some tips for a chance to make a picture of it 😊👍

Of course, there are stands with vegetables, food, handmade products and most popular drink in winter time – Glühwein. All old city of Bern is full of confeti! Be careful, kids have no mercy and they through confeti sometimes directly in to your face! But the good news is that confeti battle normally starts just at the end of the market, around 16:00.

Candy shop 😍

No Glühwein- no party 🍷

The Battle field

Zibelemärit is differently the place to go if you are around Bern in November. The atmosphere is very positive, everyone is happy to celebrate this amazing tradition!

The five things about Castle Church of Spiez (Schlosskirche)

If locals say the truth, then we are looking at the most beautiful bay in Europe (we also heard “in the World”)…Anyway, Spiez is really beautiful! Turquoise water in the lake, stunning Alps view and middle ages castle with its church. About the castle, we already posted here.

The five things about the Castle Church of Spiez /// 5

1. Castle Church of Spiez or Schlosskirche is one of the oldest churches in region Bern. It calls 1000 years old church. There are few of them around the lake of Thun. You have also one in Einigen, and one in Thun. The first date about the church in Spiez is 762 AD. It was built with help of Irish missioners which came to the region of Thun in 500 AD. This church which we can see today is probably built around 900-1000 AD.

img_4384

2.An interesting part of the church is a tower. Which is probably even older than the church. But the spire is added just in 1628.

3.Inside you can see old frescoes, which are quite faded, but still interesting. They take you to the early middle ages…

4.In the church is a coffin of Sir Albrecht von Erlach. Erlach was one of the main family which was based in the Castle of Spiez. Other families were Strättligen and Bubenberg.

img_4378

5.The church is still active and it is a beloved place for weddings.

img_4373
Church is prepared for a wedding!

P.S.

To visit the church you don’t have to pay. The only thing – please, be quiet…When we visited this place it was an English speaking family inside as well. We don’t know it was American or Australian people, maybe other nationality, but they were so disrespectful to other people inside the church and actually to a holy place as well. They were very loud speaking, screaming and laughing, so we had to go out and wait until they will disappear…Please, have a respect for other people, even if you do not believe in God and Christian churches…Thank you.

The farmers tradition “Alpabzug”

In Autumn in Switzerland takes the place one beautiful and emotional event – Alpabzug. Farmers with their herds coming back to stalls from the Alps. This spectacular event collect tourists and locals in mountain villages. Cows are walking proudly through the main streets with beautiful flower crowns.

What do flowers mean?

Whole summer cows grazing in a wild nature in high mountains. If whole summer was safe and no accidents happened, then all mother cows are wearing beautiful flower crowns.

What do bells mean?

Bells have a big space in Alpine culture. The biggest bells wearing older cows which are giving the most milk or giving birth to many calves. More proud about the cow – bigger bell on the neck. They are quite heavy and loud that’s why cows wearing them just for the special events. The rest have smaller bells. These bells cows are wearing whole summer. The first meaning is: if the cow or all herd is lost in mountains is easier to find them. The second thing about bells is deeper. Every herd has an own melody. Farmers are very proud of theirs own sounds. When cows are grazing and making a little movement with heads, then the whole herd is like an orchestra in mountains. Herdsmans are meditating on this music….Every farmer family are very proud of the bells they have. They collect them by generations and with an honour demonstrating them on their chalets or farms. Ones we asked a specialist about if these bells are disturbing the animals? The answer was: “Absolutely not, cows love music and when they wearing bells – they giving more milk!”

Cow with the bell
Farmers proud

Where and when to watch it?

Every village has an own date for this amazing event. Everything depends on the weather. When is getting cold in mountains and grass is getting poor, then in one-day herds are coming back to stalls one by one. Normally village organises an event. For example, this year in Gstaad Alpabzug is 02.09.2017. All information you can find easily on Google. During the event for sure is the market with cheese, meat and other handmade and homemade farmer products. There are jodlers, alphorn music performances and many other traditional entertainments.

What is funny in Gstaad – cows are walking on the promenade where are Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Ralph Lauren boutiques. Last year was very funny – one young cow nearly went in Ralph Lauren shop 😀 Also, at the end of the Alpabzug through all village was proudly walking the best bull – Muni.

Head of Switzerland – Bundeshaus.

There is one very important day in Switzerland – 1st of August. All country celebrating National Day. By day there are many attractions for folk and tourists and by night all Switzerland is full of colourful fireworks.

One of the main attractions in Bern-city this day is a possibility to visit Bundeshaus (Building of Swiss Parliament) for free! You have to be ready to stay in a long line – many people want things for free in Switzerland 🙂 And is one of two possibilities to take photos inside.

fullsizeoutput_60a

About Bundeshaus

It was built at the beginning of XX century, 1894 – 1902 year by architect Hans Auer. Swiss Parliament House is 64 m high, and the highest part inside of the building is 33 meters. There, on the sailing, is one very important mosaic – Swiss cross, all 22 cantons (1904) and phrase in Latin “Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno”. Interesting, and remind three Musketeers: “All for one, one for all”. Under mosaic, you can see a statue of three Switzerland grounders.

Unfortunately, we have just this photo without main points…

Lobby

Inside the building, you have two most important chambers: National Council and Council of States.

Council of States Chamber:

Politic basics in Switzerland

Switzerland is proud to be a democratic country. Everything that parliament decides based on the voting. Actually folk decides what is going on in their country.  In Switzerland is not just one president – they have 7 presidents. Just one person chosen by another 6 to be ala President at the meetings, where all 7 are not able to be at the same time. Anyway, even this One President representing all seven in one piece. It never happens that just one person makes a decision in Switzerland’s politic.

conference chamber

There are 26 cantons and each canton representing two persons. Except for Appenzell Innerhoden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Land, Nidwalden, and Obwalden – from all this half-cantons going just one person. After, all these councils meet each other in the Council of States Chamber.

There are 12 parties in National Council Chamber at this moment, but in all Switzerland is much more. They have a different number of chairs for every party. The most popular party in folk get the most numbers of chairs. At this moment is SVP, they have 65 chairs from 200. It is nearly 30%. SVP is a folk party, they are helping Swiss inhabitants to have a better life and better conditions to have a business, also a small one. In Switzerland, they also call SVP as a “farmer party”. Maybe, from one side they are right, because in Switzerland still, farmers are a big part of inhabitants and mostly they choose SVP. And they have really good conditions to do their job and big support from the government as well.

Other parties are:

SP – Social Democratic Party of Switzerland. They support classical democracy and pacifism. “Woman friendly”(Wikipedia). 43 chairs in National Council Chamber.

FDP – The liberals. It is the joint-largest party in the Federal Council, the third-largest party in the National Council, and the largest in the Council of States(Wikipedia). 33 chairs in National Council Chamber.

CVP – Christian Democratic People’s Party of Switzerland. They stand for Christian democracy, the social market economy, and moderate social conservatism. The party is strongest in Catholic rural areas, particularly Central Switzerland and Valais. 27 chairs in National Council Chamber.

Opposition parties:

Greens – The Greens support measures to increase energy efficiency, oppose nuclear power, and support raising energy and fuel prices. According to their policy, the resulting revenues should be allocated to social security spending(Wikipedia). 11 chairs in National Council Chamber.

BDP – The Conservative Democratic Party of Switzerland. The BDP supports bilateral accords with the European Union, and it opposes the tightening of Switzerland’s asylum. It opposes additional benefits to health insurance, although it doesn’t necessarily support limiting them. The BDP supports the raising of the retirement age, opposes any relaxation to requirements to receive social welfare, and supports same-sex marriage (Wikipedia). They have 7 chairs in National Council Chamber.

GLP – The Green Liberal Party of Switzerland. They seek to combine liberalism on civil liberties and moderate economic liberalism with environmental sustainability (Wikipedia). 7 chairs in National Council Chamber.

EVP – The Evangelical People’s Party of Switzerland. The EVP is conservative on euthanasia, abortion, registered partnerships and other typically Christian issues, centrist on economic issues and stands rather centre-left on issues of wealth redistribution, education, environmentalism and immigration(Wikipedia). 2 chairs in National Council Chamber.

LdT – The Ticino League. Isolationist, the national conservative political party in Switzerland active in the canton of Ticino. In the Federal Assembly, the League sits with the Swiss People’s Party, and commentators see it as the Swiss-Italian equivalent of the SVP.  A more notable political position of the League is its support for banning the Burqa, which it achieved in 2015. It is also strongly eurosceptic, supporting Swiss sovereignty and reduced immigration(Wikipedia). They have 2 chairs in National Council Chamber.

MCG – The Geneva Citizens’ Movement. The MCG takes eurosceptic or nationalist positions, such as supporting the preeminence of Swiss law before international law, opposing the bilateral accords with the European Union, and supporting reducing immigration (Wikipedia). 1 chair in National Council Chamber.

PdA – The Swiss Party of Labour. Is a communist party in Switzerland. 1 chair in National Council Chamber.

CSP OW – Christian Social Party Obwalden. 1 chair in National Council Chamber.

Voting

Voting in Switzerland is organised very often in many questions. Inhabitants get voting blank by post where they have to answer “yes” or “no” in different situations. It is not just who is next going to be Council. Also about daily life decisions like to build a new parking place in Centrum or not? Or to destroy old houses and build a new? And and and…

Everyone can be engaged politically. Many young people are also politically active and trying to fight for their ideas. There are many young people which are trying to save our planet like Young Green Party. Young people fight against atomic energy and conflicts between people, also against racism and fascism.

And at the end of this post, we would like to say that all in all Switzerland is a great country to be. It is safe, clean, kind and friendly. Here are handsome conditions to travel and incredibly organised railway (which actually belong to Swiss government!) – SBB. Yes, it is expensive, but you have great roads, security, well organised public transport and clean pure nature…

What do you think about the political system in Switzerland? Write your thoughts in a comment!

Statue of Jesus Christ in Lens.

It was one of the biggest surprises in Valais. We found it on the top of the 1 271,9 m! A huge Jesus monument! We did not know that something like this exists in Switzerland!

We were driving through Lens to Crans Montana. And we decided to stop in Lens and walk a little bit around, to have a vision of this village. So, we found an old Church, some beautiful old houses and then spontaneously we started to follow one of the yellow signs for hikers. It took us away from the village and we decided to stay on this way longer. We had time, the weather was beautiful…

Rhonetal

What was interesting, we were not alone. People of all ages and many nationalities were going up and down. Then we saw a beautiful place for a picnic and St.Maria altar. A few minutes later we both stopped with opened mouth. In front of us was like 30 meters high monument of Jesus Christ. We both smiled and told to each other that we found a Rio De Janeiro in Valais.

Information
Statue of Jesus Christ in Lenk was built in 1935 on the top of Colline du Châtelard mountain. The statue is 15 m high and same high is the platform. On the statue is a big metal table with the text on it: “„Le Valais au Christ-Roi“ what means “The Valais was consecrated to the King Christ”. Near platform is a little chapel where God believers can pray.

Travel with Golden Pass Panoramic Train. Gstaad – Monteux – Lausanne

Golden Pass Panoramic Train is one of the famous touristic attractions in central Switzerland. With this comfortability and luxury thousands of people discovering Switzerland each year. Imagine, that you are sitting in a train and enjoying stunning panoramas from huge windows…Sometimes Swiss landscapes look just unreal, like in a dream…

More information about booking and directions you can find on official website here

So, we took this incredible train from Gstaad to Montreux and felt really good in the restaurant wagon.

Montreux

We know many people which love Montreux. We have not so huge love for this place but still we were here more than ones. This is beautiful, of course, but for us is a bit boring. Yes, you have very beautiful promenade and handsome view on Geneva Lake. You have some shops and a lot of hotels, and of course main attraction for us – Chillon Castle. But still, something is missing. Maybe because in Montreux is no old town…Or not so much history behind this place. But then we are also wrong because this place was one of the favorite places of Freddy Mercury. “Queen” even owned a music studio where they recorded few albums: Jazz, Hot Space, A King of Magic, The Miracle, Innuendo, Made in Heaven…Some other famous stars recorded their music here as well: AC/DC, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Rolling Stones and others. Anyway, you should visit this place by your own and write us how did you personally felt here.

Then we took another, regular train to Lausanne…

Lausanne

Lausanne is big and very international. It is nice place to visit! This is the city of students, tourists and urban lifestyle. Comparing to Geneva is more easy and relaxed. Geneva is a business center of French Switzerland full of luxury and rich citizens. Same as Zürich in German Swiss. And Lausanne is more like Bern. Old, cute and chilled.

The city is beautiful. A lot of museums, cultural stuff, churches, lake and many other attractions . We had no time to see it all. What made us be surprised is that in the center of Lausanne smelled like pee (it was hot summer). Citizens must be very sporty because Lausanne is built on hills. You have to go a lot uphill and downhill. To drive bicycle here is impossible 🙂

So, we quickly found a viewpoint (mostly like everywhere is the main cathedral), made some pictures and went to search for a beach. We found one nice grass beach with the pool. We also could swim in the lake. Water was pretty warm!

At the moment is everything. Thank you for reading and see you soon :***
